About the Heaviest Wave

Copper, magnet, audio player & amplifier

2017 · Ural Industrial Biennial — Yekaterinburg

About the Heaviest Wave is a sound installation composed of 76 raw copper plates shaped like waves. They were produced at the RMK copper factory in Kyshtym, in the Ural region. Each wave is suspended by thin enamelled copper wires, near which small magnets are placed. All the wires are connected to several audio amplifiers transmitting sinusoidal waves. The presence of the magnets causes the wires to vibrate, each one responding with varying intensity according to its own resonant frequency.

This frequency shifts subtly with the possible movement of elements in the room, creating slight frictions between tones. The copper waves thus act both as electrical conductors and as resonant bodies.

As visitors move through the space, they can gently touch the wires to set the elements in motion, thereby altering the overall tonal texture.
